RE: Cancellation of Temporary Permit

A couple of years ago friends of ours left Mexico without turning in their decal. During the time they were at home in Ohio their vehicle was stollen. A year later they entered Mexico with a different vehicle and were not allowed to get a permit for the new vehicle. They were told that they would have to get official verification that their vehicle was stollen. They went back to Eagle Pass and called the police department and their insurance company and asked that they fax a copy of the police report and a letter from the insurance company that the vehicle was stollen. The faxed letters were in English and were accepted. We were traveling together so I saw how the entire transaction took place.

RE: Return that Temporary Importation Permit !!!

In 2006 we had a 10 year permit. On the way out we stopped at the Audana and went inside and I guess we had some papers cleared. A girl came out and removed the decal. I know she didn't know what she was supposed to do, and worse yet, we didn't know if the decal should be removed. The last two years we have flown down. In about ten days we will be driving to Mexico in the same vehicle as 2006. In a couple of weeks we will report how we made out. Thanks to berry&vand we will not get a 10 year permit.

RE: Mexicans are not allowed to buy diesel vehicles?

moisheh: You are right a vehicle cann't be imported unless it meets all of the US standards. And thanks for mentioning the Customs Service. I looked up the customs area you suggested. I did find out that certain vehicles over 25 years old can be imported without meeting all of the safety and environmental requirements but there still seems to be some restrictions and the vehicle must be imported an authorized importer.

RE: Mexicans are not allowed to buy diesel vehicles?

drt: I have wanted to bring an older VW bug back from Mexico but always thought it couln't be licensed here. One time I asked at the US consulate in Mazatlan. They gave me a brochure from the US Dept of Transportation that didn't have any specific information. I was in our local state motor vihicle office about a week ago and asked if I could license a Mexican VW. One lady said yes. I asked her to ask her supervisor. The supervisor also said yes. She said all that was needed was the title and a notarized bill of sale. So you could check with your state motor vehicle department to see what they would say. I just bought a Jeep for a toad other wise I would buy a bug in Mexico. I guess the ICE officials at the boarder don't check incomming vehicle. If I could get a VW into the US, I think it could be sold for part and get my money back if it couldn't be licensed.

RE: Hitch extenders.

I plan to tow a Jeep Wrangler behind a F350 with a 10 1/2 ft camper. The center pin hole of the PU hitch is 24" from the back edge of the camper. I asked a supplier what length of extender I would need. He said "if you have 24", that should be plenty for towing. Also, if you are going to use an extension and then a tow bar, please be aware that the extension will reduce your overall towing capacity. When towing, it is best to keep the weight as close to your vehicle as safely possible, so I would not recommend using an extension and then a tow bar to tow your Jeep." So maybe you could go without an extender.

RE: New Tire$$$ ???

I am in the need of six tires for my Ford F350.
Why does one tire cost $126.00 and another %233.00?
Michelin XPS 235/85 R16 Load Range E $233.00 which are on the truck now.
BF Goodrich Commercial T/A Load Range E $126.00
Which should I buy?

RE: Import car from Mexico....anyone?

rvmex:
I believe each state has a law requiring a new resident to license a vehicle in that state withing a certain number of days. Out of state students and military are probably exceptions. And can a person insure a vehicle with Mexico plates?

RE: Devil's Backbone!

I have a question about Pemex stations beyond Gomez Palacio and Torreon. We usually stop for the night at a Pemex near Leon Guzaman. We leave Eagle Pass at day light and usually get to Guzman at three or four in the after noon. We would like to go further so we can get into Mazatlan by about three PM. We usually get there about five or later. Does anyone remember where there are Pemex stations after Guzman. We like to take the Libre to see the small towns and people. We've taken the toll road to Durango and it only saved about 45 minutes.

RE: Thanks to all who answered my questions...and one more

allanalex:
We have taken an ATV to Mexico on four trips. In Mazatlan it was dangerous to ride on the street. You will see lots of rented ATVs on the street in the Gold Zone. I went on the beach with the ATV and was quickly told that I better get off, which I did. At Teacapan if your in a camp ground near the village, you can ride in the town and on the beach for miles. One year we stayed at Rancho Los Angeles CG near Teacapan and road the beach for miles. Now we stay at the dry camp near town. In San Blas, the bugs were so bad on the beach we only took one ride. Rincon de Guayabitos is a good place to ride. There you can ride the town, the beach right among the people, down the beach for miles, up into the hills, to the village to the South, and I used to ride the highway to the town north of Rincon to get a case of beer. You have to watch out for dogs they like to chase ATVs. I ran over one in Rincon but didn't hurt it. At Sayulita, the beach is too rocky, and the town isn't much, but you can ride the road that goes South for miles. Puerto Vallarta is too big for an ATV. At Perula, you can stay at the Red Snapper CG and ride in the little town, out into the country, and for miles on the beach. Going South about two or three miles you come to a rock out-cropping that is difficult to get through. We sometimes went to the left up into what was once intended to be a housing development with streets layed out and then back to the beach and on to a little fish camp. Beyond the camp is a dry RV camp where you will generally see two or more RVs parked. We have stayed there. Tenacatita, not much there. Puerto Vallarta is too big. In Melaque and you can ride the town, up the hill to the left for a good view of the town and ocean. About half way up the hill there is a road going off to the left that is rough but passable down to a little secluded black sand beach. On the road up the hill, if you stay on the black top for about a mile you will come to a village and one of the most beautiful cove in all of Mexico. And you can ride the beach to Bara de Navidad a couple of miles South. Haven't road much on the East coast of Mexico. We just took short trips around the towns near the camp grounds, but At Cancun, we road to Isla Mujeres. I hope you luck on getting a space at Mar Rosa. We will be there in January and part of February before we head South, first to the dry camp at Teacapan. In Mazatlan we will stay part of the time at a CG North of town and part of the time at a hotel in old town where we can park our PU camper inside the compound. While in Mazatlan you may want to stop by and have a beer with a get together of gringos (expats, snow birds, and vacationers) who get together each Friday a 4PM at the bar/restautrant called Canucks in Olas Atlas which is near old town, and on Sunday at 4PM at the hotel Las Flores in the Gold Zone.

RE: New to RV'ing - questions about Mexico travel

We have used a NATURE-PURE water filter on the cold water line in our unit for years. It purifies the water we drink and use for cooking and never have to use bottled water.

RE: Devil's Backbone!

We have driven the backbone 12 times (6 down and 6 up) and will go again in January. Two trips were in a 28ft Class C towing an extended cab ranger PU and 4 times in a PU camper. Going down in the Class C towing the PU realy was hard on the breaks. On the way back up, we unhooked the PU and my wife drove it to the top. One time I was leading in the Class C and came around a sharp curve going slow and met an eighteen wheeler coming at me in my lane. When the driver saw me he applied the brakes and with all his tires smoking he came within a couple of feet of smashing into me. I backed up enough for him to get by then I proceeded up the mountain. As I went on I kept looking in the mirrow and couldn't see the PU. I was worried the my wife had trouble getting by the eighteen wheeler. Finnally I stopped and then my wife cought up. When we go together I asked if she had trouble, she said no she was just driving slow and enjoying the scenery.

I keep seeing reports of a new mega resort to be built in Escuinapa with a reference to Teacapan that will take 7 miles of beach front. Has anyone seen more information than just that it is planned?

RE: Poll-First Hand RVing Crimes In Mexico

My first trip to Mexico was in 1947, sixty one years ago and made many trips since then. Been RVing in Mexico since 1979. My wife had her pocket book stolen in 1979 in a Ajijic. I had my wallet picked from my pocket two years ago in the Mazatlan market. In all the years I have never heard first hand of any thing more than things being stolen. We go with the premise that if it can be stolen it will be, so we lock everthing up.

RE: Portable Boats

I have a 10 foot Sea Eagle and an 8 HP motor. Took the boat along when we had a Class C. Now we have an extended cab PU with a Lance TC. Have taken the back seat out of the PU to have space to carry the boat and motor. Has anybody done this? Also do I have to register the boat since it will be used with and 8HP motor? I have never registered it before.
